Book log 2

I'm reading "A History Of The Arab Peoples" in my spare time, so my reading's going pretty slowly.

Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke

I liked this? I dunno, if suffers a little bit from early sci-fi problems, ie there's a lot of telling instead of showing and large passages that go "everything is like this now". It's about the interference of an alien species in humanity and then humanity's eventual ascension to a higher plane of being. The plot of wonky but it's an interesting book, I enjoyed reading it. Some bits were funny, but only in the way that at one point a guy was super shocked that the average TV viewing time was 3 hours. THREE HOURS!!! No real understanding of personal computers or anything like that but they did have have hologram technology!

Man, I want a holosuite.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

I read this in the car on the way to Glasgow to sign my lease, took me about an hour, which isn't surprising since it's a really short book intended for children. I've never seen the film but WOAH this book is creepy as FUCK. Especially the line "A spider's web only needs to be big enough to catch flies" and the scene with the other father in the basement. Like, good book but man, creepy creepy creepy. If you like that kind of thing, go right ahead, it's a good book and pretty clever but man, I'm glad I read it in the daylight.
