Snowflake Challenge: Day One

I'll be trying to do as much of the snowflake_challenge as I can this first couple weeks of january so stay tuned!

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

DAY ONE: In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favourite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator

rec no1

i forgive you - i wrote this for [community profile] bandombigbang 2013 and the very large majority of it was written while I was living overseas in the Dominican Republic and found that this was the only story I could focus on. It's one of the largest fanworks I've ever posted and I'm very proud of it - of the story and the way the plot managed to hold together. I'd been working on it on and off for 2-3 years when I finally posted it, so it was very much a labour of love. Because I wrote it for [community profile] bandombigbang I got art for it made by [personal profile] sylvaine and a mix from [personal profile] theletterelle . It was pretty special and magical for [personal profile] sylvaine to get to make the art for it, several years after we'd first had the skype conversation about Bill Beckett in the Killjoys universe that sparked the first scenes I ever wrote for it. [personal profile] sylvaine got to see it start and got to be a part of its finish, which was amazing. (I've just realised I'm cheating and also reccing [personal profile] sylvaine's fanworks. Her art for i forgive you is truly brilliant.) I'm reccing this because I'm so proud of it and spent so much time working on it at a time that was really pivotal for me, my time in the Dominican Republic. The story and the characters are really embedded in my mind now and it's one of my favourite fanworks I've ever been part of.

The title, which to me if often the most important part of a story, is from the mailbox we see in the Na Na Na video, which has the large open eye and says "i forgive u". In the fic, the letters are a way of communicating with the dead which is also something that one of the characters does in Dead Flies In The Summertime which I rec below, so i guess they can be considered to exist in the same universe. The idea of the dead and how we remember them is one of the major concepts of i forgive you and Christine, despite being dead from the first few lines of the story, is probably one of the most important characters, since the memory of her that Bill has managed to hold onto informs all of his actions.

Rumours Of A Sunken Ship - I wrote this for the bandom BFF fest in 2012 as a gift for [personal profile] lucifuge5 . Even more than I forgive you, this fic is the one I'm most proud of writing, probably one of the things I'm most proud of writing ever. It's very short, only 2,000 words and change, but once I'd gotten my head around how I was gonna respond to the prompt (Frank and Spencer being friends?? how??) I really loved writing it and it flowed very smoothly. I was really happy with how it came out then and I continue to be super happy with it.

The title for this is one of my favourite titles i've ever given a story. It's from a poem called Worth It (A Thursday Telephonically) which is about a couple who both work intense, busy jobs and how their relationship is conducted through the telephone. It's an amazing poem and I think the first stanza applies pretty well to the entire story:

"Around ten I call you
to say I have ten calls
another meeting, six letters,
a packed morning, various appointments
and I miss you.
The phone holds rumours of a sunken ship,
bubbles and silences."

Dead Flies In The Summertime - The first bandom fanwork I ever produced! I wrote this for [community profile] no_tags in...god, 2011. I was proud of it then and I'm proud of it now, although I think it shows its age and my ability at the time. It's another killjoys fic and short as well, but I have such fond memories of participating in my first no_tags and joining bandom as a fandom that I don't think I'll ever stop loving this fic. It marks when I first rejoined fandom after a long time away and my first step towards making all my amazing fandom memories and friends!

From snowflake :)

I forgive you is WONDERFUL, sad and bleak and hopeful and just. Yes. I've recc'd it to several people (I'm named differently on AO3, not an un-kudosing reccer, those confuse me ;)).

I hadn't seen Rumours of a Sunken Ship before, it's really good - such an interesting look at their characters and Dead Flies in the Summertime is so very REAL in what is a very unreal universe - cracking.
